1st President of the United States (1789–97). General of the Continental Army during the American Revolution. A surveyor by trade, Washington became the first American military hero by leading American forces to victory over the British Army.

Author of the Emancipation Proclamation, the executive order abolishing slavery in America, who also passed the thirteenth amendment making slavery illegal. Assassinated in 1865 by Southern sympathizer John Wilkes Booth.
